Brendan Taylor breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record

Dhruv Pandove, a young cricket prodigy, was poised to become India's next Sachin Tendulkar. At just 13, he made his first-class debut for Punjab, captivating fans with his exceptional talent. Dhruv's accomplishments were breathtaking; he scored his maiden first-class century at 14, while Tendulkar took a year longer to achieve the same feat.

At 17, he was the youngest player to score 1,000 runs in the Ranji Trophy. Like Tendulkar, Dhruv was eager to make his mark on the international stage. His promising career was tragically cut short on January 31, 1992, when he died in a road accident in Ambala at the age of 18. His sudden demise left fans and cricket administrators in shock.

The accident occurred after Dhruv returned from Odisha, where he had played in the Deodhar Trophy, to spend time with his parents in Patiala. Despite warnings to wait for better weather, Dhruv decided to take a taxi to Patiala, never making it as he was killed in the accident. His untimely death created a void in Indian cricket, leaving those who knew him in awe of his potential.

Many, including cricket legends Chetan Sharma, Anil Kumble, Vikram Rathour, and Ajay Jadeja, spoke highly of Dhruv's talent, maturity, and fearlessness. Even Sachin Tendulkar, Dhruv's cricketing idol, remembered him fondly as a gifted left-handed batsman, a leg-break googly bowler, and a cherished friend. Tendulkar had once played with Dhruv in an Under-15 camp in Indore, where they would continue to play cricket even after dinner.

The Pandove family, deeply affected by Dhruv's loss, never fully recovered from the tragedy. His mother, MP Pandove, became so fearful of cricket that she prevented his younger brother Kunal from pursuing the sport and even burnt his cricket kit. The legacy of Dhruv Pandove lives on through the all-India Under-19 invitation tournament launched by the Punjab Cricket Association in his memory, as well as the continued influence of his friendship with Sachin Tendulkar on the latter's early development.
