Brazilian football club hires coach from Bahrain

In a recent development, the Brazilian football club Monsoon from the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has appointed Aref Al-Asmi, a coach from Bahrain, as their new head coach for the upcoming 2027 Campeonato Gaúcho season. The Campeonato Gaúcho is the premier football league in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Monsoon, a relatively new club founded in 2021, announced the appointment of Aref on their social media platforms. Aref boasts an impressive 18-year career in football, having coached professional and youth teams in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Throughout his illustrious career, Aref has secured numerous titles, including victories in the Bahraini League, the King’s Cup, the Super Cup, and the FA Cup.

Expressing his excitement about the opportunity, Aref stated in a video released by the club, "I am happy and proud to be part of Monsoon. Brazil is the country of football, and I love Brazil and its players very much. This job is a great challenge. I come from Bahrain with enthusiasm and ambition, and I am committed to helping Monsoon develop, improve its game, and achieve the goals of its supporters and management."

Monsoon will participate in the state's top football division, the Campeonato Gaúcho, for the third time in 2027, following their triumph in the Campeonato Gaúcho Série A2 in 2024. The club's history is relatively brief, having been established in 2021. Initially, Monsoon had Arab ownership, but this changed last year.
