Bill Gates sends 'AI warning’ to governments around the world

No government worldwide currently possesses the necessary expertise to effectively manage the societal changes that artificial intelligence (AI) will bring, according to Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates. In an interview with Reuters, Gates expressed his concerns about the risks associated with AI, including potential threats to jobs, security issues, and addiction to AI companions.

He emphasized that no government is sufficiently prepared for the challenges ahead, despite the technology's potential to benefit the world's poorest populations if managed responsibly.

Gates explained that he has been discussing his concerns with world leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and his team, as well as China's President Xi Jinping. The Microsoft co-founder is aiming to meet Xi later this year to address these issues. While acknowledging the risks, Gates remains optimistic about AI's ability to address global inequalities, as his foundation plans to allocate at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand AI access, particularly in education, healthcare, and agriculture. This commitment is part of a larger $9 billion annual spending plan by the Gates Foundation.

In terms of potential benefits, Gates highlighted the transformative impact AI could have on healthcare, such as supporting frontline healthcare workers, discovering new drugs and vaccines. However, he cautioned that governments must collaborate to prevent potential problems, comparing the arrival of AI to a disaster movie scenario where multiple nations must unite to overcome the challenge.

Despite his concerns, Gates maintains that his relationship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, whom he hoped would donate to global health causes, has not significantly impacted his foundation's reputation or its ability to collaborate with government leaders and journalists.
