Australia's Energy Minister Heads to Saudi Arabia for Pipeline Answers

Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen is set to embark on a trip to Saudi Arabia next week, aiming to gain insights into the state of the East-West pipeline and the oil supply following recent drone attacks. The attacks, originating from Iraq near the Iranian border, led to the suspension of the pipeline, which is crucial for Saudi Arabia's oil exports.

Bowen intends to have a direct conversation with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman to obtain the latest updates and understand the government's strategy regarding the pipeline's recovery. The timeline for repairs is estimated between three to five weeks, although partial operation during the repairs is possible. However, the extent of the oil that could be transported remains uncertain.

While Australia is a significant importer of transportation fuels, the recent pipeline shutdown has exacerbated fuel security concerns, especially considering the damage inflicted on the country's refineries. In response to the Iran war, Australia temporarily reduced the fuel excise on gasoline and diesel, but the possibility of reinstating the excise remains uncertain as the government remains cautious.
