As world debates risks of AI, China closes technology gap with US

As the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) sparks a renewed discussion about its potential risks, the United States and China are engaged in a fierce competition to develop increasingly powerful AI models. While the U.S. has historically held a lead in AI model capabilities, research citations, and other areas, China has been rapidly closing the gap.

Despite U.S.-led restrictions that have prevented China from accessing some of the most advanced technologies, including cutting-edge chips and manufacturing capabilities, China has emerged as a formidable AI superpower. According to recent reports from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, China now appears to be erasing the U.S. lead in AI development.

Samm Sacks, a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies' Institute for America, China, and the Future of Global Affairs, noted that the gap between U.S. and Chinese AI models is "narrow and fragile." This development takes on even greater significance as both nations express growing concerns over the potential risks associated with AI.
