Arneva Promenade Fully Reopens Following Structural Repairs

Orihuela City Council has completed repairs and improvements on Calle Barranco de Arneva, restoring the promenade for locals following structural damage and a collapse in May. The Infrastructure Department worked on two sections: one as part of a project to repair 2019 DANA flooding damage, and the other to address the recent collapse.

Orihuela Mayor Pepe Vegara visited the completed project along with Infrastructure and Maintenance councillor Víctor Valverde and Arneva’s local representative, José García Haros. The ravine is now channelled and covered, creating a promenade used by residents. After the collapse, technicians inspected the site, finding that the former covering system, made of beams and hollow blocks, had structural issues, possibly exacerbated by water from the 2019 storms.

The channel, which collects and drains water from the Sierra de Hurchillo and runs near homes, was deemed a critical factor in the damage. Municipal technicians replaced the damaged covering with hollow-core concrete slabs, improving strength and durability. They also repaired and upgraded the promenade's surface. Residents requested 12 mulberry trees to be planted, chosen for their suitability and to prevent root damage.

Benches were also added. Valverde noted residents' desire to keep trees and add seating, as the promenade serves as an important meeting place, especially for older people. García Haros praised the council's quick response and the improved promenade. Mayor Vegara emphasized the authority's ability to react swiftly to urgent structural issues, reaffirming the council's commitment to Orihuela's outlying districts.

Further improvements are being considered, including a lift for better access around the church, requested by residents for those with mobility challenges.
