Army warns of possible attacks on churches, schools

The Nigerian Army has issued a warning regarding potential terrorist attacks targeting churches, schools, and other vulnerable public places across Nigeria. This alert was conveyed in a communication dated September 9, 2026, signed by AM Sodiq and sent to the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.

The document, obtained by SaharaReporters, reveals that terrorist groups, specifically the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), are allegedly intensifying their mobilization and preparation for possible assaults.

Intelligence suggests that ISWAP has been gathering resources and soldiers in parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central, and some areas of the South-West regions of Nigeria. The Army warns that these attacks could occur "any moment from now," targeting Catholic and Protestant churches, primary and secondary schools, NYSC orientation camps, and other susceptible locations. Furthermore, there have been reports of armed fighters moving from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.

The military has also noted that suspected ISWAP members are allegedly monitoring identified targets with the assistance of local collaborators. They express particular concern about the resumption of the 2026/2027 academic session, as the terrorists may exploit this period to carry out mass casualties and instill fear among the populace.

The timing of the potential attacks is believed to coincide with the return of students and teachers to schools, aiming to maximize the impact of casualties and public insecurity in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Based on these intelligence findings, the Army believes that the terrorist groups may have advanced beyond mere planning and are now preparing for the attacks. Consequently, heightened vigilance is recommended around the identified targets and other public places that are considered vulnerable. The military urges for increased surveillance and stricter security measures to be implemented to mitigate the potential risks posed by these anticipated terrorist activities.
