In a statement on his Instagram Stories, Manning admitted his comment was "insensitive" and expressed regret for the pain his words caused. He specifically apologized to Rowe, acknowledging her personal hardships, and vowed to be more thoughtful in his future actions.

The controversy arose after a postgame interview between Rowe and Sarkisian was abruptly cancelled, prompting a flood of AI-generated videos that mocked the incident. When asked about the AI video during a press conference on Sept. 14, Manning lightheartedly referred to one that showed Sarkisian slapping Rowe, saying it was "hilarious."

His comments drew widespread condemnation, with critics including USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan and Fox Sports reporter Laura Okmin condemning his lack of sensitivity and the environment in which he made his remarks.
