Anwar calls for stronger Malaysia-India synergy in E&E and semiconductor sectors

Kerala, on September 15, saw Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urging Malaysia and India to enhance their cooperation in the electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor sectors. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia is aiming to become a significant player in these industries in Southeast Asia, while India is also making considerable strides in the same sectors.

He affirmed that India is an emerging economy with a strong focus on E&E and semiconductors in the region, and is a leading exporter to the United States. Anwar believed that reinforcing this synergy could boost their capabilities and mutual benefits. During a Hi-Tea Engagement with the Governor of Kerala and prominent Indian business leaders in Calicut, around 30 companies from India, Malaysia, and the Gulf countries participated in the discussions, representing diverse sectors like medical and healthcare, semiconductors, construction, AI, digital technology, IT, engineering, retail, renewable energy, and transportation.

Anwar, also serving as Finance Minister, stressed that India is a key emerging economy and Malaysia should continue to diversify its trade and investment relationships while preserving strong ties with existing major partners. The bilateral trade between Malaysia and India reached US$18.55 billion (RM79.33 billion) in 2025, making India Malaysia’s largest trading partner in South Asia.

Anwar also highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Kerala and Southeast Asia, particularly via the Malabar Coast, which he considered a vital part of the region’s cultural, religious, and intellectual heritage. He suggested leveraging these historical connections further to strengthen cooperation between Malaysia and Kerala, especially in trade and investment.

Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Minister of Human Resources, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, were among the officials present. After completing his five-day working visit to India, Anwar departed for an official visit to the Maldives, taking off from Calicut International Airport at 7.26 pm local time to reach Velana International Airport in Malé.
