Another Sinkhole Appears on Newly-Built Road in Lahore

A new sinkhole has emerged on a recently built main road in Johar Town, Lahore, reigniting concerns over the construction quality carried out by the Lahore Development Authority’s (LDA) Engineering Wing. The incident occurred as a large trailer was traversing the road, resulting in its right side becoming lodged in the damaged area.

This has sparked public outcry, calling for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take swift action against the project director responsible and blacklist the contractor behind the project. The road was only recently completed, and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) had also installed a significant drainage system in the vicinity. The same road had previously suffered collapses at multiple points, leading to several accidents due to the sudden emergence of craters.

LDA officials stated that when complaints are lodged over illegal construction, the authority typically suspends the officers involved. However, they maintain that no such disciplinary action was taken in instances of engineering shortcomings. Numerous residents of Johar Town expressed their apprehension while navigating the roads in the area, demanding stringent measures against the contractor and officials accountable for verifying the quality of construction materials utilized in the project.

An LDA spokesperson confirmed that an investigation would be launched, and appropriate action would be taken in line with the law.
