Ahmed Al Sharaa: Syria has transformed from a major problem into a great opportunity

Dubai: Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa declared that Syria had transformed from a major problem into a great opportunity, as greater stability and the lifting of sanctions opened up the nation to investment and restored hope after years of conflict. In a keynote address at the Arab Media Summit 2026 in Dubai, Al Sharaa emphasized that Syria's stability would benefit not only the country but also the wider region, positioning it as a secure trade corridor linking East and West.

He credited the UAE's generous hospitality, particularly that of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE's Vice President and Prime Minister, for fostering positive relations between the two nations. Al Sharaa praised the early support from the UAE, citing examples such as DP World's involvement and the connection between Jebel Ali and Syria's port of Tartous.

He highlighted that Syria had endured unprecedented sanctions and 14 years of war, but the transitional period had allowed Syrians to regain hope and confidence. The President outlined a shift from a socialist economic model towards a free-market system, with the private sector playing a greater role. While some changes might initially be challenging, he assured that their positive effects would become evident over time.

Syria is now moving towards a policy of action rather than complaints or empty promises, focusing on delivering tangible results on the ground. The Syrian President also stressed the independence of the country's decision-making, stating that the decision to liberate Damascus was made solely by the Syrian leadership, despite the involvement of major powers.
