Agility's new humanoid is supposed to stop before it gets too close to humans

Agility Robotics' new humanoid robot, Digit 5, has been designed to safely operate near people. The company showcased renderings of the teal-blue robot ahead of its unveiling. Digit 5 is equipped with sensors that allow it to detect nearby humans and slow down or stop if someone gets too close. If a person continues to approach, the robot can lower itself to the ground and shut off its motors to avoid any potential harm.

This feature marks a significant improvement over Agility's previous humanoid robots, which have largely been confined to safety barriers in warehouses and factories.

The company aims to prove that humanoids can work effectively in spaces designed for people. Agility claims it has secured over $300 million in multiyear orders for Digit 5, despite the business remaining unprofitable. Digit 5 costs approximately $200,000 upfront, with additional costs for deployment, software, and maintenance. The robot can lift up to 50 pounds, about 40% more than its predecessor, and can operate for over 20 hours a day.

Digit 5 is set for release in North America later this year, followed by the European Union and the United Kingdom.
