Adam Silver: It Would Be a ‘Failure’ If Trail Blazers Left Portland

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his hope that the Portland Trail Blazers would remain in their city of origin. Speaking at a press conference following the NBA’s Board of Governors meeting in New York, Silver emphasized, "It is my hope and belief that the Portland Trail Blazers, or the Trail Blazers, can be successful in Portland, Oregon."

However, he recognized the necessity for a new, state-of-the-art arena for both the NBA and WNBA teams. Silver stated, "We need a state-of-the-art arena. I think, by any objective measure, the current building there is in the bottom measure of any arena in the league." The Trail Blazers have called Portland home since their founding in 1970, moving into the Moda Center in 1995.

Nevertheless, the arena has not undergone a comprehensive renovation since its construction. Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon, who acquired the team in March, seeks public funding to cover the $600 million renovation expenses. The Portland City Council approved $120 million in funding last month, along with $365 million from the state and $101 million from Multnomah County, totaling $586 million.

Nonetheless, the team must still reach an agreement on the arena's lease terms. Silver indicated his willingness to assist all parties involved in these negotiations. The NBA commissioner also addressed potential league expansion in Las Vegas and Seattle. For Las Vegas, Silver mentioned several groups participating in the franchise bidding process and several potential sites, including a renovated T-Mobile Arena or a modern entertainment venue.

He cautioned against prematurely committing to a specific site. Regarding Seattle, Silver noted that discussions about expansion have been more limited due to the presence of a suitable arena already in place, Climate Pledge Arena, which currently hosts NHL, PWHL, and WNBA teams. Additionally, Silver confirmed ongoing negotiations with the EuroLeague regarding a potential NBA stake in the European league.

While the NBA does not require EuroLeague acquisition for launching its European expansion, Silver believes a united front between the two leagues would be advantageous. NBA Europe is anticipated to commence in the fall of 2027.
