Accra-Kumasi Expressway: Mahama to honour GAF engineers with Companion of the Volta

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that space has been reserved within the Accra-Kumasi Expressway to accommodate a future railway line connecting the two major cities. At the handover event of the expressway's Right of Way, Mahama revealed that the Finance Minister will develop a financing plan to revitalize Ghana's railway system.

He emphasized that the government has deliberately left space in the expressway's design to allow for the integration of a rail line between Accra and Kumasi. The President expressed the aim of developing an expressway network spanning across the country, from Aflao in the Eastern region to Elubo in the Western region. He mentioned that the Accra-Kumasi Expressway would be extended to the Northern part of Ghana.

Additionally, Mahama outlined plans to connect the expressway to the Greater Accra and Ashanti orbitals. Work has already commenced on the Ashanti Orbital, known as the Kumasi Outer Ring Road, as part of the Big Push program. The road will facilitate the bypassing of Kumasi City by heavy trucks traveling from the south towards Burkina Faso and other northern destinations.

Similarly, the Greater Accra Orbital will offer alternative routes for motorists traveling from Aflao who do not intend to enter Accra. The two orbitals will be interconnected eventually, all leading to the development of a more efficient transportation infrastructure across Ghana.
