Workers must complement AI skills with professional expertise to remain relevant – ALX Enterprise

Employees must continually enhance their skills and learn to blend artificial intelligence (AI) with their professional expertise to stay relevant in the rapidly evolving workforce, according to ALX Enterprise Partnership Manager Edward Akani. Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on September 14, Mr Akani emphasized that AI would not replace humans entirely but would fundamentally alter job performance, making adaptability and continuous learning crucial.

He stressed that workers who effectively combine their existing professional skills with AI tools would be better equipped to navigate the changing job market. Akani pointed out that while AI lacks the insights and skills that humans possess, workers need to go beyond merely understanding AI. They must develop the ability to merge technical skills, professional expertise, and creativity.

He likened the need for these enhanced skills to the transition from traditional bank tellers to automated teller machines (ATMs), which eliminated some traditional teller functions but created a demand for workers to acquire new skills. Mr Akani warned that employees who remain specialized in a single role without adapting risk becoming more vulnerable as industries transform due to AI-powered tools and systems.

He concluded by stating that this transformation is a pattern that will likely be seen across various sectors as businesses increasingly adopt AI. ALX Enterprise is actively collaborating with businesses to identify emerging skill gaps and develop tailored training programs.
