Woman arrested after trying to hire hitman on dark web scam site

A 45-year-old woman was arrested in Rotterdam on the weekend for allegedly attempting to enlist the services of a hitman on a Dutch scam website, according to prosecutors. The woman, who referred to herself as "Jerom" when communicating with the website, allegedly requested the hitman to kill her ex-husband and ensure his death, without concern for the ex-husband's elderly mother who lived with them.

The woman transferred US$1,400 (€1,200) in bitcoins as a downpayment for the hitman's services, despite the website advertising non-existent "contract killing" services. The scam website was identified during an investigation by RTL Nieuws and the client was overheard instructing the hitman to "burn him alive and make sure he doesn’t survive."

The police confirmed that the act of arranging the killing was still considered a crime, even though the hitman did not exist.
