Synthetic "digital Frankenstein" identities are now readily available on dark web marketplaces for as little as $200, according to researchers from identity protection company Coveron and threat exposure management platform NordLayer Intelligence. These fabricated identities are created by combining stolen personal data with AI-generated details, resulting in a fake person that can bypass automated know-your-customer (KYC) checks.

Researchers discovered a surge in interest and inquiries related to synthetic identities on dark web forums and Telegram channels, with the number of posts increasing dramatically from 40 per month in Q1 2024 to 307 per month in Q2 2026. The identities are often sold as complete packages, but individual components like deepfaked selfies or cloned voices can be purchased for as little as $10.

To combat this growing threat, experts recommend monitoring personal data for breaches, freezing credit if not applying for new accounts, and being cautious of unusual identity verification requests. Businesses should implement layered verification systems and utilize identity theft protection services.
