Wakil DAP kecam jenaka ‘tak senonoh’ pemimpin Umno, tawaran maaf bersyarat

Two DAP constituency representatives, Syerleena Abdul Rashid and Lee Chin Chen, criticized a controversial Umno leader for his "unpleasant and immature" remarks targeting a Catholic pastor and subsequently requested conditional apologies. Syerleena, who is also a Bukit Bendera MP, argued that political responsibility demands thoughtful consideration before sparking controversy, rather than simply expressing regret afterward.

She described the "speak first, apologize later" culture as outdated, as it leads to repeated instances where statements offend the public, elicit anger, and then receive explanations and apologies, only for the issue to be forgotten again.

Noorazli Said, another Umno leader, stated he would be willing to apologize if his remarks offended the sentiments of the Malaysian Christian community. He emphasized that the intention was not to insult or demean any religion through the joke about a pastor and nanny, which was related to Psalm 129 in the Bible. Syerleena acknowledged that an apology was necessary, but stressed it should not be treated like a "reset button" that allows everyone to forget the action that necessitated the apology.

She implored forgiveness, but suggested that time and reflection on one's motives should be given before asking for another chance.

Lee Chin Chen, an Adun Bilut, highlighted the significant difference between asking for forgiveness after someone is offended by a joke and requesting forgiveness for making an inconsiderate joke in the first place. The former places the issue in the context of how others interpret or feel about the statement, while the latter acknowledges a mistake was made and willingness to accept responsibility.

If the situation were reversed and a political figure used Islam as the basis for a sexual innuendo, Lee argued that society would not accept an excuse of "misinterpretation" or "without malicious intent." He concluded that both the individual involved and possibly the wider public could face criticism, inquiries, and potential legal action.

Lee emphasized that one cannot have unequal service in terms of religious respect; if one demands respect for one's religion, one must also grant equal respect to others' religions.
