Venus disappears behind crescent Moon in striking UAE sky event

On Monday, a rare astronomical event captured the attention of observers in the UAE as Venus briefly disappeared behind a crescent Moon. The Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory, managed by the International Astronomical Center, documented the phenomenon on September 14. The Moon began its journey across Venus's apparent disc at 2:34:59pm, taking two minutes and 21 seconds to completely obscure the planet.

Venus remained hidden behind the Moon for an impressive one hour and 24 minutes before beginning to reappear just before 4pm, becoming visible again at 4.01pm, marking the conclusion of the event. The visual impact was enhanced by both celestial bodies presenting crescent shapes when viewed from Earth, as illustrated in a photograph shared by the observatory.

This event provided a vivid demonstration of how Venus's appearance varies when seen from Earth. Similar to Mercury, Venus, which orbits closer to the Sun than Earth, exhibits phases resembling those of the Moon depending on its position relative to the Earth and Sun. During Monday's occurrence, the Moon, being significantly closer, passed directly in front of Venus along the line of sight from Earth, causing the planet to disappear temporarily before reemerging more than an hour later.

The UAE observatory's capture of this rare stellar occultation highlights the country's significant role in the global astronomy community.
