Vanuatu Ferry Capsize Leaves One Dead, 30 Missing

At least one person lost their life and another 30 individuals remain unaccounted for following a ferry capsizing incident in Vanuatu on Friday, according to DW. Spanning roughly 1,750 kilometers east of Australia, the South Pacific archipelago nation is home to a population of just over 350,000 people. The tragic event occurred between the islands of Santo and Ambae, where the MV Matui, operated by Tui Shipping Agency, went down in exceedingly heavy seas.

The vessel, carrying over 40 passengers and crew members, never reached its destination in Ambae. Prime Minister Jotham Napat's office took charge of the search and rescue operation on Sunday afternoon, following the leader's dissatisfaction with the inability to connect with senior officials. The rescue efforts have since shifted focus towards the southeast coast, where currents may have brought survivors to shore.

The investigation into the incident has already commenced, with suspicions of negligence from the operator Tui. The loss appears to stem from strong winds, marine warnings being disregarded, and potentially the vessel being overloaded. Reports regarding the initial response to the sinking vary, with Vanuatu parliamentary representative Matai Seremaiah stating a crew member swam ashore and alerted authorities, while French news agency AFP reported that a hotel owner's employee plucked a survivor to safety on Saturday afternoon.

Hotel owner Ashley Beveridge expressed frustration over the lack of urgency displayed by authorities, highlighting the need for immediate action. Locals scrambled to search for survivors using cargo ships and a plane on Saturday afternoon. The MRCC in Noumea, New Caledonia, now aids in the ongoing search and rescue efforts, with 12 people identified on Sunday morning. Survivors are receiving medical attention at Northern Provincial hospital on Santo Island.
