UK PM Andy Burnham cancels events after death of father

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has canceled his engagements for today and tomorrow in light of his father's passing. The 80-year-old, Roy, had been battling Alzheimer's disease. Burnham had previously spoken about his father's illness, noting that his father remained unaware of his son's ascent to the position of Prime Minister.

This revelation deeply moved Burnham, prompting his dedication to reforming the social care system. The cancellation came after Burnham was scheduled to meet with business leaders at 10 Downing Street. In an interview with The Times prior to assuming office, Burnham disclosed the extent of his father's condition, expressing that his father was unaware of his imminent rise to power, which he deemed a poignant family achievement.

Burnham pledged to honor his father's legacy in a major speech on social care reform, emphasizing his commitment to alleviating the struggles faced by countless others in similar situations. Communities Secretary Angela Rayner expressed her condolences, acknowledging the devastating and heartbreaking nature of the situation. Roy Burnham, who was in his mid-80s, was a former telephone engineer, having worked for both the Post Office and BT.

He and his wife, Eileen, raised him and his two brothers in Culcheth, Cheshire, during the 1970s and 1980s. Burnham detailed this close-knit upbringing in his book "Look North" and later expanded on it in a 2024 co-authored work with Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram. Despite not having attended university themselves, both parents believed their children could achieve higher education if given different opportunities.

Their parenting style was characterized by quiet encouragement and confidence-building, fostering an environment filled with music, life, laughter, love, and support.
