Udon Thani student seeks help after losing baby in lone dorm birth

A university student in Udon Thani is receiving medical care following the tragic loss of her premature baby, born alone in her dormitory on September 12. The fourth-year student was reportedly around seven months pregnant when she went into labour. The infant, who was physically weak, succumbed to her condition shortly after birth.

Police have launched a forensic investigation to determine the precise cause of the baby's death. The young woman, who had separated from the baby’s father during her pregnancy, decided to carry the pregnancy to term and raise the child independently while pursuing her studies. Despite the difficult circumstances, she continued her academic pursuits.

Following the loss, the student sought assistance at a nearby temple to handle the funeral arrangements. Monks advised her to report the infant’s death to the police, leading her to a police station in Udon Thani’s Mueang district. Upon arrival, she fainted, prompting officers to provide medical assistance and transport her to a hospital.

The incident was reported to authorities around 6pm on September 13. Community leaders and police have since investigated the events leading to the birth and the infant’s death. The mother and others connected to the case will be interviewed once she is medically stable. Police are awaiting the forensic results before deciding on any further legal actions.
