UAE Space42 signs deal with US company for $1bn satellite communications venture

UAE space technology company Space42 and California-based firm Viasat have entered into a partnership to develop a satellite communications platform, with a $1 billion investment from the UAE firm. The Equatys platform aims to provide direct connectivity between smartphones and devices to low-Earth orbit satellites, enabling operators to offer services in areas without mobile coverage.

Space42 managing director Karim Sabbagh stated that services would be available from 2029. He explained that Equatys would complement terrestrial technologies and mobile network operations, offering users the same experience of voice and data communications even where terrestrial networks are absent or congested. The $1 billion commitment allows Equatys to establish a strong foundation from the outset.

The company has already been actively involved in satellite internet technology for the past year, transitioning into a fast-paced development and manufacturing phase. Space42 brings 400 relationships with global mobile network operators, and collectively, they have established connections in 160 countries, facilitating discussions and collaborations with these operators. Equatys can be seamlessly integrated into the services of these mobile network providers.
