Trump names Wesley Hunt for new US ambassador to Saudi Arabia

President Donald Trump has nominated Representative Wesley Hunt to serve as the United States ambassador to Saudi Arabia, a position that has been unfilled for months. Mr Hunt, who expressed that accepting the nomination is "the honor of a lifetime," highlighted the strategic importance of the US-Saudi partnership and the significant responsibility that comes with the role.

He detailed his extensive experience in the region, including his time as an Army officer and as a diplomatic liaison in the kingdom. Mr Hunt, who joined Congress in 2023, had also attempted to run for the Senate this year. His nomination, along with others, was submitted by the President to the Senate on Monday and will require approval from both chambers of Congress.

If confirmed, Mr Hunt will take office at a critical time, as the US strives to maintain its strong alliance with Saudi Arabia amidst the ongoing Iran war. The country has been a primary target of the conflict, with Saudi Arabia engaging in airstrikes against Yemen's Houthi rebels who have struck the nation's energy infrastructure.

The ambassadorial position is part of a series of vacant posts in the Middle East since President Trump took office, with the US yet to appoint ambassadors to the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, and Egypt.
