Toronto Police Service opens its 4th Community Safety Hub in Dufferin Mall

The Toronto Police Service inaugurated its fourth Community Safety Hub on Monday at Dufferin Mall, a space aimed at fostering positive interactions between police and community members. The hub is designed to be a non-enforcement setting that focuses on crime prevention through awareness campaigns regarding fraud, scams, and theft, as well as the safety of youth and seniors.

It will serve as a central point of contact for individuals to speak with Neighbourhood Community Officers one-on-one and receive referrals to community resources. Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue emphasized that the presence of visible police officers in the area can deter violence and build trust within the community, stating that the Community Safety Hub is part of a "hyper-local approach" to policing that allows officers to better understand local needs and respond more effectively.

Located near the mall's food court, the hub is staffed by Dufferin Grove Neighbourhood Community Officers, with additional support from officers from 11 Division and auxiliary officers. The initiative follows a successful model at three other Community Safety Hubs located at Fairview Mall, Shops at Don Mills, and in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood.

These hubs have reportedly led to significant reductions in various types of crime, such as a 65 per cent decrease in auto theft at Fairview Mall and a 100 per cent reduction in sexual violations at Don Mills. CityNews interviewed shoppers at Dufferin Mall, who expressed support for the initiative, believing it will enhance safety in the busy area.

The Community Safety Hub at Dufferin Mall will operate daily, though not round-the-clock, and individuals requiring immediate assistance are advised to call 911.
