Titus Glover questions Laboma Beach demolition, proposes widening Kpeshie Lagoon outlet

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister and Tema East Member of Parliament, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, has raised questions about the demolition of structures at Laboma Beach. He believes a more technical solution should have been explored to address flooding issues in the area. This came after a demolition exercise on September 13, 2023, where several structures were removed due to concerns about developments around the Kpeshie Lagoon.

While Mr. Glover supports the removal of buildings obstructing water flow, he suggests widening the existing bridge or opening at the Kpeshie Lagoon's entrance to the sea. This could potentially enhance water flow and alleviate flooding without destroying businesses that have invested in the area. He also expressed concern over the economic impact of demolishing these businesses, which have created jobs and made significant investments.

Mr. Glover urged for a review of the situation to explore if improvements to the lagoon's outlet could offer a more sustainable solution. The demolition follows a 21-day ultimatum on August 7, 2023, issued by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for occupants of the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon to leave the area.

Authorities claim this exercise is part of efforts to reclaim waterways, remove unauthorized structures, and tackle flooding concerns in the Greater Accra Region.
