The great American road trip, fueled by – and undercut by – the automobile that created it

The great American road trip has long captivated the imagination of millions, with its allure mixed in with the inconveniences of long hours spent on the road. This quintessential American pastime has been celebrated in literature, such as Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," and mocked in films like "National Lampoon's Vacation." The appeal lies in the anticipation of reaching iconic destinations like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, or Death Valley, as well as the delightful surprises encountered along the way, like tumbleweeds.

Post-World War II, the golden age of the family road trip emerged, driven by factors such as increasing middle-class incomes, paid vacation time, a surge in car ownership, and extensive highway investments. Families embarked on journeys to explore national parks, historic sites, and monuments, fostering family bonds and providing a means to educate children about American democracy.

However, the open road was not a bastion of freedom for all. Black families often faced segregated facilities, even outside of the South, which led to the creation of guidebooks like the Green Book. The hardships experienced by Black travelers during their vacations played a role in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, highlighting the systemic discrimination they encountered.

The highways themselves became magnets for entrepreneurs, who sought to capitalize on the growing road trip culture. Motels like Wigwam Village, with their uniquely shaped rooms, competed with one another to create memorable experiences for travelers. Similarly, roadside attractions like the world's largest nutcracker added to the charm of the journey, with businesses striving to outdo one another in the quest to attract visitors.
