Summer success sends Brezden to the Black Sea

Brekken Brezden made a strong debut as a new figure skating season began in August, marking her as one of Canada's elite skaters. The Dauphin athlete secured a silver medal in Montreal and a win in Waterloo, surpassing the 166 Skate Canada benchmark for international assignments with a total score of 171.03 in Montreal's free skate portion.

Skate Canada's high-performance directors selected Brezden for the Trialeti Trophy in Batumi, Georgia, one of 10 international events in the ISU's Challenger Series. She will compete in Quebec City this weekend before heading to the Black Sea city at the end of September. Brezden aims to break 60 points in her short program, which she plans to perfect for upcoming competitions.

Her ultimate goal is to earn a podium finish at the 2027 Canadians in Mississauga, after qualifying for the championships at the Challenge event in Winnipeg in late November. Balancing her rigorous training schedule, including 20-plus hours of on- and off-ice training each week, Brezden has focused on managing her knee pain, which has been an issue in the past.
