States must work together to address climate action - EU

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has urged EU member states to collaborate on climate action in memory of firefighters, medics, and first responders who perished while battling wildfires this summer. In her opening remarks to MEPs in Strasbourg, France, Ms Metsola emphasized that after individuals put their lives on the line to safeguard others this summer, it is now the responsibility of the European Parliament to unite and establish new safeguards for the next crisis.

Ms Metsola, a prominent EU figure, noted that Europe endured a series of record-breaking heatwaves this summer, during which hospital workers protected patients and endured hazardous temperatures at work, as well as brave firefighters and emergency responders attempting to shield those in danger. The European Parliament's most senior official stated that the human toll and the combined threat of extreme heat and wildfires endangered communities, damaged ecosystems, and cost economies billions.

Applauded by MEPs, Ms Metsola stated that while the risk of extreme weather events occurring again remains, MEPs must collaborate to draft new climate plans that will assist communities, businesses, and individuals when the next crisis arises.
