Sky’s death raises fresh questions over Roodeplaat K9 care

The death of Sky, a police dog, has raised new questions about the care provided to animals at Roodeplaat veterinary hospital. Ian Cameron, chair of the Portfolio committee on police, stated that Sky's death has become a voice for many who have suffered similar fates due to animal welfare failures at the facility. A case has been opened at Kameeldrift police station, with a senior detective assigned to investigate the matter.

The South African Veterinary Council and the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have also opened files concerning the police service's veterinary services. Concerns over the history of animal welfare failures at Roodeplaat have emerged, particularly in light of parvovirus outbreaks in 2019 and 2020 that resulted in numerous dog deaths.

Cameron requested all official mortality, treatment, and carcass records to verify the final figures. Allegations of poor conditions, including dogs being fed on floors surrounded by feces and insufficient space to dispose of dead animals, have been made. Cameron emphasized that Sky's death cannot be seen as an isolated incident, and earlier warnings and investigations must be examined.

Some of the same individuals and management structures involved in earlier deaths are alleged to have remained responsible for animal care during Sky's injury, with some promoted in the years following. Cameron stated that this raises a serious question about why these same alleged failures continued to occur despite investigations and warnings.
