New York, November 15, 2023 - Billy Joel, the 77-year-old American music legend and renowned singer-songwriter, has shared encouraging news about his health after undergoing brain surgery to address a rare neurological condition. Diagnosed last year with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), the condition involves excess fluid buildup in the skull, putting pressure on the brain. Joel described the sensation as "rocking on a boat" due to severe balance issues.

Faced with warnings from his doctors that performing live concerts was putting additional strain on his brain, Joel had to cancel several shows to prioritize his recovery. To prevent the condition from worsening, his neurologist recommended a surgical procedure to implant a small device called a shunt in his brain, which would drain the excess fluid. Joel accepted the treatment, expressing concern over potential memory loss, saying, "I don't want to lose my marbles."

Fortunately, the surgery proved successful. Joel reported that the implantation of the shunt in his brain improved his memory, balance, and overall functionality. He also noted that years of exposure to loud rock concerts had taken a physical toll, likening each performance to giving himself a mild concussion. Although Joel performed two songs with a tribute band in January, doctors advised him to minimize stress levels for now.

Despite taking things easy, Joel reassured his fans, stating, "I'm OK. I want people to know, don't worry about me. I'm still here."
