SCC inmates commended for 100% pass in BECE

Eleven juvenile inmates at the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC) in Accra achieved a perfect 100 per cent pass rate in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), highlighting the transformative impact of education and rehabilitation. The offenders, who were serving various sentences at the facility, sat for the examination through Ghana Education Service’s prison education programme.

At a ceremony honoring the candidates, Deputy Director of Prisons Yayra Ashong-Mettle emphasized that education is central to the Ghana Prisons Service's mission of reforming inmates into responsible citizens. She stated that the success of the young offenders demonstrates that investing in their minds leads to safer communities in the future.

Despite studying under challenging circumstances at Reformers Junior High School within the SCC, the inmates secured passes in all nine subjects, with several attaining an impressive aggregate of 12. The Deputy Director of Prisons credited the dedication of prison officers serving as teachers and the support from non-governmental organizations and volunteers for their achievements.

The Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which removes financial barriers to secondary education, will benefit the inmates who qualify for SHS. One inmate expressed gratitude to the Ghana Prisons Service, Ministry of Education, and their teachers, vowing to remain disciplined and aim for higher achievements in SHS. The Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, reaffirmed her commitment to expanding educational opportunities at the centre and urged officers to continue providing inmates with hope, education, skills, and support for a better future.
