Samsung Display advances smartphone OLEDs with 2K resolution, 165Hz refresh rates

Samsung Display has unveiled a groundbreaking smartphone OLED panel that boasts 2K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate, marking the world's first such achievement in the industry. This innovative technology promises to deliver sharper images and smoother motion for high-end gaming smartphones. The 6.9-inch panel is set to make its debut on the iQOO 16, a top-tier gaming smartphone from Vivo's esteemed iQOO brand.

The company announced this development on Monday, highlighting that the new OLED panel consumes approximately 30% less screen power compared to recently released gaming smartphone OLEDs equipped with 1.5K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate.

With a maximum brightness of 2,800 nits in high-brightness mode, the panel can also reach an impressive 10,000 nits at a 1 percent on-pixel ratio, as reported by Samsung Display. While higher resolution and refresh rates typically demand more pixels and more sophisticated drive circuitry, making it challenging to maintain brightness and power efficiency simultaneously, Samsung Display has managed to overcome this hurdle.

The company achieved this feat by increasing the thickness of pixel signal wiring by 10 percent, thereby expanding the cross-sectional area through which current flows.
