Sabah mulls relocation of Kota Kinabalu central market

KOTA KINABALU, September 14 — The Sabah government is considering three potential locations for the relocation of the Kota Kinabalu central market from the city's central area. Chief Minister Datuk Hajaji Noor, who visited and examined two of the proposed sites - one along Likas Bay and another near Alamesra, stated that no decision has been made on the suitability or the exact location of the new market.

The third proposed site is situated in the Darau area, approximately 20 kilometers from the city center. The relocation aims to create a more comprehensive market with various activities and facilities, including a dry market, wet market, cultural and tourism products center, hawker center, and fish wharf, according to Hajaji. The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) will prepare a working paper on the proposal before presenting it to the Cabinet for further consideration and decision.

The proposal is still in its early stages. It is unclear what will happen to the existing central market site after the relocation, as the decision will come from the city mayor. Currently, no cost estimate is available, as the government is only assessing potential sites.
