Poland pledges to strengthen security after drone strikes along border with Ukraine

Poland and Ukraine expressed strong condemnation on Sunday of Russian strikes near their shared border, specifically targeting a train heading from Warsaw to Kyiv. The attack occurred just after another train carrying several European Union officials, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, had passed through the area.

The Ukrainian rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, reported that the locomotive hit was on a track situated two kilometers from the Polish border, but confirmed that no casualties were reported. Former CIA Director David Petraeus, who was also on board the diplomatic train, recounted hearing Russian drones flying overhead before an explosion, causing passengers to evacuate swiftly.

Johnson condemned the attack in a post on social media, deeming it "random and senseless". The strikes come amid heightened tensions as US President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to cease attacks on Russian refineries, citing a fuel crisis. Russia struck western Ukraine with drones on Sunday, just after US envoys visited the two nations in hopes of restarting peace talks.

Zelensky's government maintains that Moscow intentionally targeted the train to prevent the escalation of conflict into Europe. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting in Warsaw, warning of potential escalations from Russia in the weeks to come. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that Putin is "literally knocking at the door of Europe and NATO".

Russia claimed it targeted "military cargo railway infrastructure" from European nations. The Kremlin hinted at potential three-way talks involving Ukraine and the United States in October, but dismissed the idea as "impossible" when asked about Putin meeting Zelensky at the G20 summit in December.
