Pennsylvania's growing measles outbreak

A Pennsylvania woman in her 40s died from complications related to measles, marking the third measles-related death in the state this year, as the nation grapples with its largest measles outbreak in 35 years. The deceased woman resided in Jefferson County, where her death was confirmed by County Coroner Greg Furlong on Saturday.

Furlong described the loss as "heartbreaking" and emphasized that measles can be a severe and potentially fatal disease, declining to provide further details. The Pennsylvania Department of Health acknowledged the death and affirmed that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the case. As of Friday, the state reported a total of 676 confirmed measles cases across 37 counties, resulting in 124 hospitalizations.

Less than 1% of the confirmed cases involved fully vaccinated individuals. The woman's death is the third recorded measles-related fatality in Pennsylvania, with the previous two fatalities involving infants, according to Dr. Stephen Diamantoni, the coroner of Lancaster County. Typical measles symptoms include cough, fever, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a red rash.

Serious complications, such as pneumonia and brain swelling, can arise from the illness. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office is working alongside Pennsylvania health officials in the case investigation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the US is experiencing its most significant measles outbreak since 1991, with over 3,000 confirmed cases reported this year.
