Penang: LRT can be expanded to two additional lines if needed, says CM

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the LRT in Penang can potentially be expanded to two additional lines beyond the one currently under construction. The LRT system, part of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corporation, consists of two more lines as outlined in the Penang Transport Masterplan. However, the chief focus remains on completing the main line first, which stretches 29.5km from Silicon Island to the Komtar administrative complex in George Town, comprising 22 stations.

Chow emphasized that while additional lines are possible under the masterplan, they are costly. The LRT has caused traffic disruptions due to its construction, complicating an already congested road network. The chief minister expressed that it will be his successor's decision whether the state requires the extra two lines.

Chow presented the state's eighth-year report card on the Penang2030 development masterplan at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Prai. The administration received a 70% pass rating for their work, despite facing numerous challenges, including the pandemic, global economic uncertainties, US-imposed tariffs, supply chain issues, and regional conflicts. The chief minister urged the state to continue building upon the foundation established in the past eight years and adhere to the Penang2030 vision.

Penang2030's four foundational themes and 16 strategic initiatives aim to make Penang a more competitive, liveable, and sustainable state. Key areas of focus include major infrastructure, digitalization, environmental resilience, heritage, and economic development. Digitalization efforts prioritize children and senior citizens, while major infrastructure projects include the expansion of Penang International Airport and the LRT.

Other initiatives include the Juru-Sungai Dua elevated highway, the Penang Hill Cable Car Project, and the Silicon Island. These projects are designed to enhance the state's connectivity, tourism appeal, and growth capacity.
