Officials say 4 people were hospitalized after a crane collapsed at a Miami construction site

MIAMI (AP) — Four individuals were admitted to a hospital following a crane accident at a construction site in Miami on Monday morning, according to authorities. The incident took place in the upscale Brickell neighborhood just after 8 a.m. Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia expressed gratitude during a press conference that no fatalities occurred, noting the severity of the situation on site.

A woman driving a car on a nearby street witnessed the crane starting to collapse and managed to avoid injury by reversing her vehicle and escaping unscathed. However, the car subsequently caught fire. The crane also toppled onto a storage container housing two construction workers. Firefighters and crew members worked together to extricate the trapped workers from the metal container while simultaneously battling the fire.

The crane operator managed to escape as the crane fell over. All three individuals, including the crane operator, were taken to a nearby trauma center with minor injuries. The woman involved in the car accident received similar treatment at a different hospital. Hevia described the scene as “complex,” with one crew member cutting trapped workers free while another fought the fire. The cause of the crane's collapse, specifically a piling rig, remains under investigation.
