NPA raises petrol price floor to GH¢16, diesel to GH¢16.77 from September 16

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has raised the price floor for petrol and diesel from September 16, 2026. The new petrol price floor is GH¢16.00 per litre, up from GH¢14.53 before. Diesel's price floor will rise to GH¢16.77 per litre, from GH¢15.60 prior. LPG will remain at GH¢10.97 per kilogram. This means oil companies cannot sell petrol for less than GH¢16 or diesel for less than GH¢16.77.

The NPA's price floors do not include the extra fees charged by international oil trading companies, or the profits of oil marketers. Industry experts expect significant price hikes at the pumps, as oil marketing companies may not absorb the increases. The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers predicts a 4.24% rise in petrol prices to an average of GH¢16.26 per litre and a steeper 10.23% increase in diesel prices to an average of GH¢19.07 per litre.

COPEC attributes this to a sharp rise in crude oil and refined product prices worldwide. They also projected a 16.45% increase in LPG prices to GH¢15.32 per kilogram. COPEC is calling for more subsidies and urges oil marketers to lower their margins to help consumers cope with the price hikes.
