National Cathedral Brouhaha: NDC Must Apologise To NPP Over Corruption Claims – Gbande

Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for the NDC to apologize to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the previous government if their allegations of corruption in the National Cathedral project are found to be baseless. Gbande emphasized the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation into the project before supporting any reconstruction plans.

He stated that the NDC had previously accused the NPP of corruption in connection with the project, claiming that $58 million was insufficient to build the proposed edifice. According to Gbande, the party must now prioritize the investigation over any reconstruction or committee establishment. If the allegations are proven false, the NDC should collectively apologize to the NPP and the previous government.

Gbande, a Christian, supported the idea of a monument for God but warned against hypocrisy and double standards in addressing the National Cathedral controversy. He urged the NDC to uphold principles in handling the matter and stressed the importance of individual credibility. President John Mahama, however, stated that he has no objection to the construction of a National Cathedral but emphasized that taxpayers' money should not finance the project.

He suggested that Christian organizations could raise the necessary funds, and criticized the demolition of properties to make way for the cathedral, including judges' residences and the Malian Ambassador's residence. The President also mentioned that a forensic audit of the project had been completed and was awaiting review by the Attorney General.
