Nashville Airport set for Dolly Parton name change

On Friday, the board of commissioners at Nashville's airport unanimously voted to rename the facility in honor of Dolly Parton, the renowned Smoky Mountain singer. The decision comes in recognition of Parton's significant contributions to Tennessee, estimated to bring in $1.8bn annually through her Dollywood theme park. Parton passed away last month at the age of 80.

Although the singer herself did not initially believe the name change would come to fruition, Tennessee's governor, Bill Lee, and Nashville mayor, Freddie O’Connell, expressed strong support for the idea last month. Lee emphasized Parton's "Volunteer spirit" and her enduring legacy in Tennessee's fabric. The renaming process, however, will require substantial investment, with the need for new signage, updates to airport monuments and merchandise, and alterations across uniforms, business cards, legal contracts, and leases.

While the exact name for the renamed airport remains undetermined, Tennessean Alejandro Ramos highlighted Parton's broader impact beyond music, noting her significant contributions to international literacy through her Imagination Library charity. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority stated they are currently working with relevant parties to determine the best way to honor Parton's legacy with her new namesake.
