MTN deepens cybersecurity awareness as fraudsters evolve

MTN Ghana has ramped up efforts to enhance cybersecurity awareness among its staff in order to counter the growing sophistication of cybercriminals, hackers, and fraudsters. The company is providing employees with essential knowledge and information-security practices to safeguard sensitive corporate and customer data, thereby strengthening the company's initial defense against fraud.

During the annual cybersecurity awareness training held in Takoradi, Madam Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, Senior Manager of Enterprise Information and Security Governance at MTN Ghana, emphasized the importance of a well-informed workforce in recognizing suspicious activities and guiding customers appropriately. She also highlighted that employees and customers are crucial components in the cybersecurity equation, as fraudsters predominantly target individuals rather than attempting to bypass complex technological systems.

The regional training session, which included various company personnel such as field activation agents, territory sales controllers, and branch managers, aimed to improve employees' understanding of emerging cyber threats and responsible information handling. Madam Hanson-Kotei stressed the need for employees to remain vigilant while handling company and customer information and to share the knowledge gained with customers and the broader public.

She advised customers to keep their Mobile Money (MoMo) Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and one-time passwords (OTPs) confidential and never share them, even with trusted individuals. MTN is also taking steps to educate customers through local languages and face-to-face engagements, as some individuals may not regularly utilize social media platforms.

By empowering employees and customers with cybersecurity knowledge, MTN aims to create a more secure environment for both the company and its clients.
