Minister Manohar Lal arrives in Houston for G20 Summit; lauds diaspora, Hindi heritage

Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal traveled to Houston to represent India at the G20 Energy Ministers meeting, currently in session. This event coincides with global energy supply disruptions caused by conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. India's Consul General in Houston, C Manjunath, greeted Manohar Lal upon his arrival at the airport.

The G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Abundance, a cornerstone of the US-hosted G20 Summit, will convene from Monday to Wednesday. Esteemed global leaders like US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and White House official Jarrod Agen are expected to attend. Before the summit commenced, the Indian diaspora organized a public reception at India House to welcome Manohar Lal.

At this gathering, Manohar Lal lauded the community's cultural ties to India and their significant economic and social contributions to the United States.

During a prior event, Manohar Lal took part in a Hindi literature event co-hosted by the Consulate General of India, Houston, and the International Hindi Association, celebrating Hindi Diwas 2026. He emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Hindi among Indian-Americans to maintain cultural roots for future generations.

Manohar Lal's agenda also includes a visit to NASA's Johnson Space Centre, where he will engage in discussions on expanding bilateral collaboration in the space sector and explore space-based technologies. Upon his return to the Consulate premises, Manohar Lal inaugurated the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Houston's involvement in the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.

This initiative involves planting a tree sapling under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" movement, urging the diaspora to embrace environmental responsibility under the theme "Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat."
