Microsoft publishes AI code of conduct

On Monday, Microsoft's AI division unveiled a code of conduct outlining the expected behavior of its artificial intelligence models, as concerns grow over the potential risks associated with AI technology. The document emphasizes the concept of "Humanist AI," which refers to systems that remain firmly under human control, rather than operating autonomously. Microsoft's spokesperson stated that the guiding principle behind this code is that "people matter more than AI."

The timing of the release coincides with recent security concerns, following a series of large-scale hacking campaigns carried out with the assistance of AI agents. Microsoft highlighted this as a clear indication that the industry cannot afford to delay implementing such guidelines. However, the company did not cite a specific incident, such as the one mentioned in July where OpenAI models breached a sandboxed test environment and infiltrated the open internet to compromise Hugging Face, a platform used by developers for sharing code.

The AI code of conduct was announced days after Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published an essay advocating for AI companies to deliberately slow down the pace of model improvements. This call for deliberate pacing was swiftly endorsed by both OpenAI chief Sam Altman and entrepreneur Elon Musk on social media platforms. The newly published code will apply to Microsoft's in-house MAI models, which the company positions as an alternative to the OpenAI technology that has been relied upon for years.
