Mexican Authorities Seized A Cryptomining Farm Owned By The Mexican Cartel

Mexican law enforcement recently dismantled a drug cartel's cryptomining operation hidden within the Puebla Sierra Norte mountains. This discovery highlights how cartels are diversifying their income streams to launder drug proceeds and finance other illicit endeavors. The seized facility, although not as massive as some industrial farms, comprised 300 GPUs, power infrastructure, and satellite technology.

Mexican authorities detected the farm by identifying its excessive power consumption, which they tapped into from a nearby hydroelectric dam without authorization. David Saucedo, a Mexico-based security analyst, noted that such a setup required significant technical expertise and funding from a well-connected group, likely one of the powerful cartels in Mexico.

While cryptomining is no longer as prevalent as it was nearly a decade ago, it remains lucrative for those with the necessary hardware and electricity access. Given that a single Bitcoin is now valued above RM300,000, even a modest number of coins remains valuable. Cryptomining operations still face substantial electricity costs, leading to instances of illegal farms illegally tapping into external power sources, potentially causing electrical fires.

The recent surge in AI technologies has driven up the cost of GPUs, prompting data centers and AI startups to purchase NVIDIA GPUs in bulk, including high-end models like NVIDIA's Blackwell-based RTX 50 Series.
