Menstruation, consent move up in sex-ed lesson plan

Manitoba's new curriculum introduces lessons on menstruation and consent at earlier ages, aiming to reduce stigma and stigma associated with sexuality education. The curriculum, which will be fully implemented by 2028-29, integrates discussions about menstruation, ejaculation, and puberty-related changes in Grade 4. Students are required to recognize menstruation as a natural part of growth and development.

Explicit lessons on giving, seeking, and declining consent are emphasized in all grades, with Grade 7 students learning about the conditions for sexual consent, such as freeness, reversibility, informedness, enthusiasm, specificity, and the need for continuous communication in various sexual situations and relationships.

Additionally, the curriculum explores holistic health concepts, including mental well-being, Indigenous worldviews, and connection to community. By incorporating these themes, the revised curriculum aims to better address student needs and prepare them for modern challenges, such as navigating technology and social media impacts on mental health.
