Man drowns after alleged cultists’ chase into Lagos river

A man named Opeyemi drowned after allegedly jumping into a river while being chased by suspected cultists in Lagos, Nigeria, according to police reports. The incident allegedly took place on September 12, 2022, in the Agility area of Mile 12. Opeyemi was reportedly on his way to purchase an item when some individuals began chasing him.

The police source stated that the men eventually caught up with him, attacked him, and then he jumped into the river in an attempt to escape. Despite attempts by some individuals to rescue him, the attackers prevented them from doing so, leading to Opeyemi's drowning. However, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, offered a different account of the incident.

They claimed that while some residents stated Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and jumped into the river on his own, others who witnessed the event said he was chased and attacked before jumping into the river. The conflicting accounts have yet to be independently verified.
