Malaysia, Thailand strengthen energy ties with new joint development area agreements, says Akmal Nasrullah

In a significant move for energy cooperation, Malaysia and Thailand have formalized their partnership through a new Production Sharing Contract (PSC) and Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) for Block A-18-01 within the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (MTJDA). Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, currently in Thailand for a two-day visit, emphasized that these agreements would maintain development continuity, boost investor confidence, and bolster the energy security of both nations.

He highlighted that natural gas will account for 56 percent of Malaysia's total primary energy supply (TPES) by 2050, stressing the importance of sustained investment and industry capabilities to harness this resource. The agreements, signed alongside Gastech 2026, involve the MTJA, PC JDA Limited, PTTEP JDX, Petronas, and PTT Public Company Limited.

Akmal, alongside Malaysian and Thai officials, underscored the potential for further development of the MTJDA, including a new PSC and GSA for Block B-17-01, to unlock its full potential for mutual benefit.
