LTdL 2026: Gunung Jerai climb set for ‘mini Genting’ treatment

Preparations for this year's Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) are nearly complete, with the sole outstanding coordination meeting involving Sepang and Shah Alam districts in Selangor yet to be finalized. LTdL chief operating officer Emir Abdul Jalal confirmed that matters with state governments, districts, and related agencies in other states have been resolved.

The competing teams and television broadcasters have also been finalized ahead of the 2.Proseries status LTdL. Emir emphasized that the teams are all listed, and TV broadcasters have been sorted out, making the event 95% ready.

Fan turnout is anticipated to be a significant highlight, particularly during the climb up Gunung Jerai in Kedah. Local authorities and the Kedah State Cycling Association aim to transform the location into a "mini Genting," creating a special area for spectators along the route. Emir stated that the area from the mountain's foot to the finish line will be packed with fans, mirroring the overwhelming response witnessed at Genting.

Out of the 20 teams confirmed to participate, each is expected to field at least two climbers. TotalEnergies, led by Geoffrey Bouchard (King of the Mountains jersey winner at the 2021 Giro d’Italia and 2019 Vuelta a Espana), and Jordan Jegat are among the frontrunners. To intensify the competition for the polka dot jersey, the organizers have increased the points awarded at Hors Categorie (HC) climbs from 15 to 25.

Consequently, Gunung Jerai, Cameron Highlands, and Genting Highlands climbs are of paramount importance. The 30th edition of LTdL will run from September 27 to October 4 and include eight stages spanning 1,285.5 kilometers.
