Three nationalist leaders from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have joined forces in pursuit of independence. Scotland's First Minister John Swinney announced a referendum for 2031, while Plaid Cymru's Rhun ap Iorwerth and Sinn Fėin's Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O Neil from Northern Ireland signed a pact on Monday. They believe the time for Westminster has ended and support independence.

Their immediate goal is the 2031 referendum in Scotland. Swinney, Iorwerth, and O Neil lead their respective autonomous governments. For the first time, all three territories have independent-minded chiefs ministers. Wales last had a Labour leader since the beginning of its devolution in 1999, but after the May elections, Plaid Cymru's numbers plummeted.

The Scottish National Party maintained a majority but saw an increase in independentist members, including greens, in the Parliament. Northern Ireland has been governed since 2024 by a pro-unification First Minister, a move described by Trump as "fantastic" on Saturday. The text states that each nation has the right to determine its own future through democratic mechanisms and in accordance with its population's wishes.

Downing Street stated today that a hypothetical referendum is out of the question, words from Andy Burnham, Prime Minister. Scotland voted against independence in 2014 (55% to 45%), and recent surveys show a slight majority in favor of breaking away. In 2022, the UK's Supreme Court ruled that the Scottish Parliament could not hold another referendum without Westminster's consent.

In Wales, support is at 27%, according to YouGov. Northern Ireland's situation is more complex due to the 3,000 deaths during the Troubles in the last decades of the 20th century.
